The GB Animal Health & Welfare Strategy was launched in June 2004. It aims to improve the health and welfare of kept animals and protect the public from animal diseases, whilst protecting the economic and social well being of people and the environment.

In October 2004, an Animal Health and Welfare Strategy Steering Committee was set up at the behest of the Minister for Environment, Planning and Countryside to oversee the implementation of the strategy in Wales.

The AHWS Steering Committee has established a subgroup to promote the Strategy theme of working in partnership with the industry to develop Animal Health Plans.
